Teen Program Participants Headed to Latin America

Five of Mary’s Center’s Teen Program participants will be immersing themselves in the language and culture of Latin American countries and engaging in service projects this summer, thanks to the District of Columbia Public Schools Study Abroad Program. The lucky 11th graders, whose trip will be fully-funded, are (above, left to right): Daniel Ramirez, Hanan Kadir, Adam Temesgen, Hadnet Okbagabir and Abenezer Lemma.

Daniel looks forward to learning about the treatment and life of indigenous people in Bolivia. Adam says he can’t wait to go to Ecuador because "I want to see how they dance, what kind of food they eat, what type of music they listen to.” Hadnet is keen to experience daily life in Costa Rica and see how it compares to life in the United States.

The trip to the Dominican Republic will open doors for Ebenezer. “Besides coming to the United States from Ethiopia a year and a half ago, I have never traveled anywhere, so I’m really excited,” he says. It will also be an opportunity to serve the community, improve his Spanish language skills and play baseball!

The students credit our After School Adolescent Program staff for helping them to realize their dream of studying abroad. “The Program always encourages us to try new things and take any opportunity we get, so that really inspired me to sign up for this study abroad program,” says Adam.

We are very proud of them and excited that they will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the world and different cultures. Congratulations and Buena Suerte on your journey!
