Hattie Holmes Senior Wellness Center Celebrates 10 Years

The Hattie Holmes Senior Wellness Center (HHSWC), which Mary's Center manages on behalf of the DC Office on Aging, marked its 10th anniversary with a beautiful celebration on September 20.

Several special guests attended the event, including DC Mayor Muriel Bowser; Deputy Mayor of Health and Human Services HyeSook Chung; and Laura Newland (Executive Director of our valued partner, the District of Columbia Office on Aging), who all affirmed the city's commitment to making  Washington, DC the most age-friendly community in the world.

Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd was also present. He expressed confidence in Mary's Center's management of the senior center and presented a Ceremonial Resolution celebrating the HHSWC.

Jean Holmes (daughter of Hattie Holmes, after whom the center is named) and Frances Curtis Johnson (Ms. Senior District of Columbia Pageant 2017 winner) also attended, while Shawn Perry (Executive Producer and Host of WYCB 1340 AM’s popular show The Senior Zone) served as the Master of Ceremonies.

The celebration featured inspiring performances including the HHSWC Inspirational Voices Choir and the Model Cities Steppers, as well as testimonies from four members who shared what the senior center means to them. In a moving tribute poem,  members  Don and Joan Gaines said: "There is friendship here. There is help here. There is a healthy lunch. There's hugs and kisses from one side of the room to the other. There's a safe have here."

Congratulations to Teresa Moore, the Director of Hattie Holmes, and her amazing team on 10 years of serving our seniors.
