A large group of Mary’s Teen Program members and other participants spent an inspiring and educational afternoon with three D.C. United Rookies on September 23rd. Eric Klenofsky, Chris Odoi-Atsem and Ian Harkes (shown above, left to right) visited our location on Georgia Avenue in Petworth as part of the soccer team’s Rookies In The Community initiative.
The players shared advice about how to be successful in soccer and in life. They spoke about the importance of finding one’s passion, investing extra time in order to develop one’s talent, and watching and learning from the best. They also shared how they overcame failure and disappointments on their journey to Major League Soccer, and spoke about what they studied in college and what they plan to do after their sports careers.
Eric, Chris and Ian also gave our participants advice about eating well and joined the teens in a smoothie-making challenge, with very tasty results! Thanks to the players, Victor Melara (DC United’s Director of Community Relations) and Mary's Center's very own Rosa Goyes (Associate Director of Health Promotion) and Ellen Root (Chief Development Officer) for organizing the visit.
