MEDICAL & HEALTH PROMOTION PROGRAMS
Adult Care
Mary’s
Center provides primary and prenatal care to adults and adolescents including
physical exams, prenatal care, family planning and sick visits. The program promotes
holistic wellness through health screenings, cancer screenings, health promotion,
education and support, management of acute and chronic illnesses and other health
conditions.
Prenatal Care
Mary’s
Center provides care to pregnant women over the course of their gestational
months with comprehensive services that include regular check ups, evaluations
and screenings to monitor the baby’s growth and development and the mother’s
progress and wellness. In addition to medical care, mothers-to-be are walked
through the different stages of pregnancy and receive information on nutrition,
exercise, lactation, labor, delivery and lactation throughout the entire process.
Couples are encouraged to come to the visit together and be active in their
care.
Pediatric Care
Mary’s
Center serves children ages 12 and younger with complete well-baby and well-child
care; preventing illness and injury while fostering optimal growth and development.
The center emphasizes prevention and management of chronic conditions by immunizing
all patients according to schedule. Our pediatric team encourages parents to
be active in their children’s language development by providing books
during their visits, thereby emphasizing continual family communication.
Adolescent Care
Two Saturdays out of the month, Mary’s Center offers a session where
teens receive primary care including physical exams, pregnancy testing, family
planning and other supportive services. At these sessions, teens are encouraged
to bring their friends and classmates. If they so choose, they are also encouraged
to bring their parents.
Mental Health Care
Mary’s
Center is certified by the DC Department of Mental Health as a core service
provider. Our bilingual mental health services include diagnosis, assessment,
counseling, case management and prescription/monitoring of somatic medications.
Substance abuse screening, referrals and post detox counseling are also available.
When patients need emergency mental health services beyond our capacity, Mary’s
Center staff calls the DC Mental Health Access Line; which has 24/7 coverage,
including a mobile unit that can come directly to patients in crisis. The diagnostic/assessment
process includes review of client alcohol and substance abuse history, patterns
of use, treatment history/intensity of that care and other factors to identify
or exclude substance abuse or dependence as a co-occurring treatment need.
Mary’s Center staff will refer clients needing full-service substance
abuse treatment to the DC Department of Health, Addiction Prevention and Recovery
Administration’s Central Registry, which can guide clients into the appropriate
services.
Dental Care
Mary’s
Center’s dental care program, under the care of our dentist Dr. Dean, provides
diagnostic and preventive dental services for pediatric and adult individuals
via a mobile health unit located in wards 1, 2, 4 and 5. Patients are referred
to several community partners for rehabilitative dental services. Dental hygienists
provide oral health education to prenatal clients as well as school age children
in the community.
Health Promotion/Disease Prevention
Mary’s
Center provides health screenings, HIV, STD and tuberculosis testing, a comprehensive
set of counseling services and educational programs related to disease prevention
and other health related topics. The center’s staff delivers such programs
using popular academic methodologies based on community-focused practices.
Services are provided to families in communities that are challenging to
access through the outreach of a mobile van.
Community Outreach Van (Mama & Baby Bus)
Mary’s
Center’s community outreach van, also known as the Mama & Baby Bus,
is a mobile health clinic that travels throughout the District of Columbia
to provide families with health care and related services such as health screenings,
insurance enrollment, pregnancy and STD/HIV testing, domestic violence screenings
and referrals, health education, vaccinations, dental exams and referrals to
other health and social services.
Women Infants & Children
Special
Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a
federally funded program that provides pregnant women, new mothers, infants
and children under the age of five years with education about healthy foods
and nutrition. Mary’s Center strives to facilitate the process of receiving
WIC benefits.
Since the first Mary’s Center WIC site was opened in June
2002, the program has expanded its services through satellite sites around
the District of Columbia. In addition to the center’s main site in Adams
Morgan, the program also serves the neighborhoods of Ward 4, Chinatown, and
Brookland, so that residents do not have to travel far to receive benefits.
