In June 2016, our President and CEO, Maria Gomez, received the DC Dental Society Foundation’s 2016 Humanitarian of the Year Award. The Foundation recognized her support of programs that have improved the wellbeing and oral health of our community, and the outstanding work done by Mary’s Center’s Dental Department, which is led by our Chief Dental Officer, Dr. Richard Gesker.
Our Nursing Team, led by Chief Nursing Officer Dara Koppelman, was named runner-up for CipherHealth's Outstanding Patient Care Award in May 2016. Through this award, CipherHealth, a health technology company based in New York City, recognizes exceptional nurses and nursing teams across the nation, with a focus on patient safety, advocacy, and empowerment through compassionate patient care.
We were chosen as one of only 10 organizations among 1,200 in the country to be featured in The Hero Effect, an uplifting docu-series that brings to life the stories of ordinary individuals who are making extraordinary differences in their communities. Presented by United Way and produced by Dolphin Entertainment, the documentary highlights the impact of Mary’s Center’s work and features inspiring interviews with program participants and staff members. The Hero Effect airs on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), a Discovery Communications subsidiary, on the second Saturday of every month, from 10 am – 11 am EST, beginning on November 12, 2016. The episode on Mary’s Center will be broadcast on February 11, 2017.
Our Chief Operation Officer, David Tatro, was named one of the Trending 40 innovators for 2016 by Bisnow, which recognizes leaders who are “driving technology solutions, revenue and fundraising initiatives, new events and programs, and other innovations that are advancing the missions of their great organizations”.
For the 5th year in a row, Mary’s Center has received the 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America's premier charity evaluator, for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency. Only a very small group of the charities rated by Charity Navigator have received at least 5 consecutive 4-star evaluations, and we are proud to be one of them!
In September 2015, our President and CEO, Maria Gomez, was recognized by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation for making a positive impact on America through her work in the healthcare sector.
In October 2015, Maria was one of 25 women who received the Washington Business Journal Women Who Mean Business accolade. She was honored for breaking barriers, creating and leading a successful organization, showing leadership in the community and persevering in the face of adversity.
Alis Marachelian, Senior Director Community Health Initiatives & Strategic Alliances in the Health Promotion Department, was recognized by the DC Department of Health in September 2015 for her years of outstanding service and dedication to the Washington Metropolitan Regional Ryan White Planning Council. Alis worked with the Council on the comprehensive delivery of HIV/AIDS services.
